Learn About the Governor’s Endorsement

On behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Lieutenant Governor Driscoll and I welcome you tothe Mishoon Launch and Celebration on the Merrimack River.

Organized by Imagine Studios and Custom House Maritime Museum, the Merrimack Mishoon Project seeks to honor Indigenous maritime traditions and art and to celebrate cultural craftsmanship through the creation and launch of a traditionally hand-crafted mishoon. Constructed at the Museum over the past few weeks by artisans Darius Coombs of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and Jonathan James Perry of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe, the vessel commemorates this year’s Indigenous Peoples Day and serves as a living tribute to the resilience and artistry of our indigenous neighbors.

Lieutenant Governor Driscoll and I are thrilled to be in support of the Mishoon Launch and Celebration on the Merrimack River and we thank the organizers, the artisans and the Newburyport community for their commitment to today’s celebration. This event highlights Massachusetts’ indigenous roots and serves as a beacon of learning and respect for all who gather here today. Please accept our warm wishes to all in attendance.
